For your Reflection Assignments, you will be assigned one (1) Organizational Behaviour concept by your professor that you have learned about so far and demonstrate your thoughts on the topic. To demonstrate your reflective thinking describe at least one (1) related theory or model from our textbook using your own thoughts about the concept and how this is applied to a real-life experience. Your writing should be approximately 2-3 pages, in 12-point font and should focus on: 1. Describe what you have learned from the one (1) OB concept. Use your own words to describe what you have learned from this concept including 1 OB theory or model and use proper citation from your textbook. You may describe the concept in terms of how you feel, what you think or what you have learned about the OB concept. Do not copy over the details or definitions of the topic from your textbook. Rather, you should demonstrate that you understand the meaning by using your words to describe how you felt or what you learned from this topic.

2. Demonstrate one real-life application of your assigned concept. Describe a real-life experience that relates to this OB concept. This can be your own experience in an organization, or the experience of a family member, friend or colleague. You may also use a news or magazine article if need be. Executive Summary

The purpose of this report is to detail the interview that I conducted on 7th November with Mr. Gill who works as Material Technician Assistant at The City of Calgary - Transportation in Calgary. The purpose of the interview was to see how the principles of organizational behavior applied to this organizational situation, to identify existing problems or strengths of the organization, and to create recommendations to improve organizational effectiveness. Sources which explain organizational behaviour were used to support the findings and suggestions. The main strengths identified were empowerment and motivation

This report recommends the following The report begins by describing the interview and discussing how the responses tied to organizational behavioural principles. It then outlines recommendations and how organizational behaviour concepts to improve the strengths and problems identified. Appendixes containing evidence of the interview and the full set of questions asked are included.

always being dictated and he is just a follower, he is not getting enough chances to show his creativity for simply performing tasks in his own creative way. So, Mr. Gill started putting his opinions on the table but on the other hand, the supervisor started drawing a general impression of him being a rebel and someone who is not thankful of his supervisor for the effort and time he invested in Mr. Qazi. This somehow became supervisor’s ego issue and the conflict began due to which the empowerment soon turned into demotivation.

The second problem of Fundamental Attribution Theory was identified in the interview. When the supervisor started overemphasizing and exaggerating the behavior and real concerns of Mr. Gill the biasness took place. The supervisor started making wrong judgements about him which eventually resulted in demotivation

OB Concepts Linked to the Organization The first strength of Charismatic Leadership discovered at City of Calgary – Transportation Services can be described using Charismatic Leadership as an OB concept. Mr. Qazi in his interview mentioned that because of certain reasons his self-esteem was quite low when he was applying for the job. Mr. Gill would always doubt his decisions and always needed other’s approval before doing anything in his life. He was an extreme overthinker and had anxiety issues as well due to some childhood traumas and his emotions would easily get hurt. When he got hired, his supervisor noticed such behavior and started treating him positively. The supervisor would use positive words while talking to Mr. Gill, always appreciate his work and make him see the real and better version of himself. Eventually Mr. Gill started feeling empowered under the supervision of his supervisor. Mr. Gill became goal-oriented and started believing in his own power.

Keeping this scenario in mind, the best OB concept that fits here is Charismatic Leadership which says that charismatic leaders have a tendency to reduce stress of their followers and give them a constant boost if they have self esteem issues. People with such issues often absorb their leader’s direction rather than determining their own way. One study also mentions that people who have charismatic leaders feel strong connection and sense of belongingness at work which reflected on their willingness to perform well even more.

The second strength of Equity Theory discovered at City of Calgary – Transportation Services can be described using Equity Theory as an OB concept. As mentioned earlier, with

When the supervisor began overstressing and overstating the behavior and real concerns of Mr. Qazi the biasness began happening. The supervisor started making wrong judgements about him and because of those wrong judgements and wrong perception, the supervisor would put immense workload on Mr. Qazi. He would send him to multiple contractors on a short notice, send him to different construction sites where it would get difficult for Mr. Qazi to manage and because of which sometimes he would get late as well which would cause trouble for Mr. Qazi.

The reason why I chose Fundamental Attribution Theory for this scenario is because this theory refers to the tendency people show to overstate or overstress the person’s personal characteristics and overlook the situational factors because of which a person is behaving in a particular way and make judgements based on their actions.

Recommendations for the Organization

Based on the results of the interview at City of Calgary – Transportation Services and applying our Organizational Behaviour concepts, the following recommendations will help to improve the strengths or problems that were identified:

Recommendation # It is recommended that City of Calgary – Transportation Services should educate their employees regarding Selective Perception . They should provide seminars, online short courses and detailed training sessions to educated managers and all other employees that how selective perception can be the reason for someone to quit the job or have low self esteem. There are a lot of issues people deal with on the regular basis, wrongly estimating somebody’s behavior and making them suffer for something they did not commit can destroy a person’s entire career. This act should be considered as a serious offense in the workplace and companies should educate their employees to respect emotions and preferences.

Recommendation # It is recommended that City of Calgary – Transportation Services implement Emotional Intelligence. It is every important for a company to educate their employees to understand and be aware of their impulsive and judgemental behaviors to form a pleasant environment in the organization. To do so, educating employees is the only way.

Recommendation # It is recommended that City of Calgary – Transportation Services should focus on Perceptual Biases since an incorrect perception always leads to unresolving conflicts. The company should also focus Self-Awareness so that the employees could know how their behaviors affect other people’s wellbeing. The company should set up training sessions every 2 months so the employees could keep learning and reflecting.
