Terrible documentary. Let's start with the people this is about. One person couldn't play cause of covid, one person isn't even top 100, one person is third in a competition with four people, and another isn't even grandmaster in chess, and there are a lot of them. Got a bunch of washed up competitors to exercise. Now let's talk about the actual experiment. According to the ending, everybody improved by exercising, but how did they determine that? How do we know exercise even helped? How do we know the exercise actually helped? We don't, and that's why I think the documentary never goes into that.

The premise for this documentary was: "can physical exercise help people who play 'mind games' become better players?"
This documentary was extremely disappointing. Mostly because I have a huge pet peeve with this movie, which is - I love the games they play in this documentary: riichi mahjong, street fighter, and chess. I was really excited to see them play those games, maybe go into them a little bit, explain how it's played, the strategies the players we're focusing on use etc. We get none of that.
Example: say whenever we see the Street Fighter player play Street Fighter at a tournament, instead of seeing footage of the match being played, instead they just cut to the faces of the…

Available on Amazon Prime Video, “Mind Games: The Experiment” is an engaging documentary based on ASICS research on the linkage between exercise and cognitive performance. The documentary follows the lives of 4 people engaged in various types of games (chess, mahjong, memory, esports) and how exercise impacts their performance. It‘s relatively short, and I could’ve gone for more time about their training or more about the actual science. Nonetheless, Mind Games is compelling and will make you want to go out for a run.

ASICS' 'Mind Games: The Experiment' Explores the Link Between Mental Performance and Physical Exercise
Following the journeys of world-class “mind athletes” in chess, mahjong, esports and memory games as they introduce physical activity into their training routines..
ASICS ‘ corporate slogan is “anima sana in corpore sano,” a Latin phrase that roughly translates to “a sound mind in a sound body.” The brand believes that exercise, apart from providing obvious physical benefits, can also help an individual’s mind — boosting their concentration levels, sharpening their memory and increasing their general awareness. Now, that hypothesis has been laid down in concrete fashion thanks to Mind Games , a new documentary that explores the relationship between physical and mental fitness.
Mind Games highlights the journies of international chess master Kassa Korley, high-level Mahjong player Ryoei Hirano, professional Street Fighter player Sherry Nhan (better known as sherryjenix) and memory game competitor Ben Pridmore as they work physical fitness into their training regimens — with various, often humorous, levels of skepticism. Then, after four months, each “mind game” athlete enters a tournament or contest to test their skills.
