In an embedded case study, the starting and end point is the comprehension of the case as a whole in its real-world context. However, in the course of analysis the case will be faceted either by different perspectives of inquiry or by several sub-units. The book presents different methodological approaches to organize this faceting process. It uses the power of the system approach in order to apply methods, which allow a scientific treatment of complex cases in a way that will be also acknowledged by the quantitative research community. The authors emphasize that a qualitative analysis starting from the real-world level is an indispensable part of case analysis. Thus the book bridges the gap between quantitatve and qualitative approaches to complex problems when using the case study methodology.

An embedded case study is a case study containing more than one sub-unit of analysis (Yin, 2003). Similar to a case study, an embedded case study methodology provides a means of integrating quantitative and qualitative methods into a single research study (Scholz & Tietje, 2002; Yin 2003). However, the identification of sub-units allows for a ...
Jun 1, 2023 · Third, where Yin's model treats the embedded units only as units of analysis, the qualitative embedded case study method deploys these for the purposes of design, sampling, analysis, and concept refinement from various positionalities and lived experiences deemed relevant to the concept. In doing so, the units of analysis in the qualitative ...

& Asner-Self, 2011). For the purposes of the study, this research uses embedded-single case design (Yin, 1994). In embedded-single case designs, there are more than one sub-unit of analysis. In this study, Coursera-style xMOOCs constitute the main unit of analysis, while Conole’s 12 dimensions constitute the sub-units of analysis.

This study also has an embedded-case design, involving more than one unit of analysis, or embedded ‘mini’ sub-cases within each case (Yin, 2009). As a result, it is an embedded, multiple-case design.
It is imperative for a case study researcher to determine their unit of analysis. Since embedded case studies consider multiple units or objects of analysis that focus on different aspects of the case (Scholz & Tietje, 2002). Therefore, the evidence is explicated through the depth of exploration within various subunits.
