10 Successful Presentation Sheets By Architecture Students
- by Carla Paulus
- 21 June 2022
Architectural presentation sheets are more than just layouts—they’re the visual storytellers of our designs. They help us communicate concepts, ideas, and solutions in a way that’s both professional and captivating. Whether we’re pitching a project to a client or presenting to a panel, these sheets are our opportunity to make a lasting impression.
We know that creating effective presentation sheets requires a balance of creativity and precision. From organizing content to selecting the right visuals, every detail matters. When done right, they not only showcase our design skills but also highlight our ability to think critically and present clearly.
Table of Contents
Sheet 1- Neighbourhood characters
Highlighting the neighborhood’s features establishes context for the architectural design. We gather specific data on location, demographics, zoning, and surrounding infrastructure to present a clear narrative.
“Neighborhood characters” is an architectural urban design presentation sheet that shows different characters of a neighborhood and the respective design solutions. The sheet communicates through illustrations and the composition clearly shows the characters and the respective solutions. Although the sheet is filled with text, the sheet is composed and colored such that the illustrations become dominant.
Sheet 2- Network: When the community comes together
This sheet highlights an architectural concept designed for the Fentress Global Challenge, showcasing innovative solutions for London Heathrow Airport. Our primary focus was on creating an efficient and aesthetically compelling design aligned with the airport’s operational and environmental needs.
“Network: When the community comes together” is an urban intervention or a public space designed to bring the community together. It translates the design through an isometric diagram and it becomes the central part of the sheet. At this point in our article review example , it’s important to note how the detailed activities at specific places and construction details are shown in circles, effectively breaking down the complex design into understandable segments. The sheet becomes minimalistic with the focus on the design and the context becomes the background.
Sheet 3- Fentress Global challenge- London Heathrow Airport design
This presentation sheet highlights our proposal for the Fentress Global Challenge, focusing on innovative airport design at its core. We showcase a visionary solution aimed at redefining the passenger experience while prioritizing environmental sustainability.
“ London Heathrow Airport ” is an Airport design of Fentress Global challenge 2016. Since it is an airport design, the position of the airport in the context became important and so the city isometric explains the whole design. And the illustrations below resemble old yet futuristic movie shots, as it is a futuristic design competition.
Sheet 4- Fentress Global challenge- Airport design
Yet again, one of the simple yet successful presentations of airport design. The detailed and exploded isometric in the white background clearly explains every part of the design and the visualizations on the side show the interior of the spaces in the airport.
Sheet 5- Design for Vietnamese-German University
This sheet highlights the design proposal for the Vietnamese-German University campus, focusing on cultural integration and sustainable urban development. Our approach integrates modern architectural techniques with contextual elements that reflect the university’s goal to promote international collaboration and academic excellence.
“Design for Vietnamese German University ” is a campus design. The presentation has three parts: a plan, concepts, and a render. Since it is a campus design, the plan becomes the core of the design and so of the presentation. Each block is explained in words through the plan and the render in aerial view explains the overall design.
Sheet 6- Tulum Plastic School- Archstroming competition
The Tulum Plastic School submission emphasizes sustainable design and community engagement. This project focuses on repurposing plastic waste into construction materials to create an eco-friendly educational space. Located near Tulum, Mexico, the design addresses environmental challenges while offering functional solutions for local needs.
Tulum Plastic school is the shortlisted entry from the Archstroming school competition. The combination of cool colors makes the presentation sheet unique. There is a clear distinction between the sheet into three parts with the renders, concept, and drawings on the parts.
Sheet 7- KOMA-CBD
The KOMA-CBD Project showcases an innovative approach to mixed-use urban development with a focus on sustainability and functional integration. We highlight how this design balances commercial, residential, and recreational areas in a dense urban core, leveraging sustainable design principles and modern architectural techniques.
“KOMA-CBD” is the design of vertical commercial development. It becomes the best example of a portrait sheet for a vertical building design. The isometric plan with the view is one of the time savers yet efficient tips in composing diagrams. The uniqueness of the sheet remains in presenting the isometric plans with an important part of the sheet and minimizing the render to a small circle, which is not the usual case.
Sheet 8- Play with Plint
Incorporating the Plint concept into architectural presentation sheets showcases creativity and spatial depth. This design approach emphasizes the strategic layering of elements to establish visual hierarchy and dynamism.
Play with plinth is another winning school design from the Archstroming competition. This presentation sheet is well composed with a variety of content, including plans, construction drawings, renders, isometric, concept diagrams, and sections. Although it has a lot of content, each part of the sheet is distinct yet coherent with appropriate space for each.
Sheet 9- Community Rampant
Community rampant is the design of a community center . The subtle white background of the sheet highlights all the content and gives importance to even smaller diagrams. Also, minimal content makes the sheet clear and composed and explains the design with clarity. The uniqueness of the sheet lies in keeping the background white and making all the content clear and visible.
Sheet 10- Tiber Living LabxRoma
Architectural presentation sheets are more than just visual tools; they’re a bridge between creativity and communication. By combining innovative design strategies with detailed visual storytelling, we can effectively convey the essence of our concepts. Whether it’s sustainability, cultural integration, or urban functionality, these sheets allow us to showcase our vision with clarity and precision.
Tiber living lab is the redevelopment of the Tiber basin in Rome. The sheet is divided into two sections of different colors with sectional render in one and concept notes and diagrams in the other. This presentation is a great time saver presentation since an illustration explains it all and this would be a successful example for a 120-hour competition and similar.

Graphic Design Tutorial: Designing to a Grid
NewSchool recommends Adobe InDesign for designing your thesis book. Many free templates and tutorials are available online. Try starting with Blurb.com.
The grid is your underlying structure which helps create visual hierarchy by sizing and positioning images and text to create a coherent design. The grid is the graphic expression of a set of assumptions about the permissible sizes and shapes of images and blocks of text. It enables you to achieve and sustain design consistency.
Your prime consideration for text should always be legibility. Text needs to be readable and perfectly clear. Don't allow it to compete with or obscure images; it should always work with them to explain and enhance them. Keep text clearly separate from images by spacing and/or maintaining a strong contrast between values of the images and values of the text blocks.
Familiarize yourself with type, it's legibility and emotional impact, by studying the typefaces used in books and magazines and on the web. Remember less is more--don't use more the three different fonts in any portfolio. Additionally, make sure all of the fonts are very different looking to create contrast.

Presentation Sheets – How Much is Enough
rchitecture Presentation Sheets
Architectural design juries are the life and soul of architecture school. As a student, one tends to work on a project being aware of the final output they wish to achieve. This often leads to a fantastical architectural form with impressive elevations, often lacking the clarity of thought and a rigorous process.
We are inherently aware of the importance of process to justify the final design outcome, however, such shortcut methods are rather often praised and get highlighted in the juries because their dramatic appearance sets them apart from the rest of the student’s work.
The architecture project presentation might not be the core of the project, but it surely influences the viewer – i.e. the jurors who will not spend more than half an hour reviewing a student’s work with often no knowledge of their process through the semester. Presentations can also be considered as an indicator of your artistic skills and sense as a designer, which gives the reviewer an impression at first glance.
Architecture Concept Sheets
With the commencement of digital media, architecture and design education, as well as practices, have seen a big change in presentation methods, with digital media allowing a plethora of methods to work on achieving graphically and aesthetically pleasing, or rather extraordinary presentation sheets. Whether it be clients or jurors, this age of digital media has given rise to huge competition and expectation in terms of graphically remarkable sheets and presentations, therefore often reducing the hype to be more about the presentation performance than the design quality itself.
In a way it’s like a sales pitch- you are selling your design, ideas, concepts, and solutions.
Your presentation of drawings can assist a client’s imagination, or help win a commission, they should clearly communicate the three-dimensional elements and experience of your design. The drawings, graphics , and presentation boards have one main purpose – to communicate your design, and if your presentation looks good, but doesn’t do its job – you may be successful for some clients but may lack in effectively communicating what you have to offer as a designer.
However, how much impressive flair is enough to communicate the idea and when does it become redundant?
We know text-heavy slides look bad, and deep down we probably all know that presentations like that are doing more harm than good to our sales prospects. But it’s difficult to put your finger on what is bad about the presentation design or to know how to make the design more effective.
A good presentation, in most cases, is as simplistic and minimal as possible. Less but better, because it concentrates on the essential aspects and the products are not burdened with non-essentials.
Architectural Sheet Presentation
We often come across architecture presentation sheets like such, where at first glance, one is highly impressed by the stunning and aesthetically pleasing 3d renders, which more often than not, actually convey nothing. It is important to know what you wish to convey with your sheet, how to smoothly communicate the design strategies and choices, with the use of our standard tools – plans and sections. Not only do plans and sections convey the scale of design with respect to a human scale, but it also helps to give an idea of the individual space-making elements.
This can then be supported by 3d renders of the various space qualities that have been tried to achieve, rather than an overly zoomed-out or weirdly angled dramatic scene that conveys almost nothing to the viewer.
It is also more appreciable to show the correct color scheme, lighting, materials, and textures to truly talk about the design and the real experience of a visitor in your space than a cinematically heightened presentation that gives the wrong impression of reality.
Less is more. This kind of presentation technique that does not fear white spaces rather uses it to place the drawings and scenes meticulously is what gives the viewer an easy and less intimidating method to read the sheet. Using just two tones and a grid system can create a hierarchy and order to your sheet.
The use of diagrams/illustrations, sectional perspectives, and clear plans along with renders to support the visualization of space, provides an overall effective visual communication.
Dramatic yet effective. Certain projects might demand a certain emotion from the first glance of the viewer to quickly realize the standpoint and experience desired. It is understandable to have intentional elements such as dark colors, high contrast, loud background, etc. to communicate highly evocative and dramatic projects such as Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind, where the project itself demands a certain desired emotion by the designer. In such cases, graphically loud and perhaps little abstract drawings can actually help in bringing out the project’s inherently different vibe.
Architecture Sheet Presentation
When creating presentations it can be easy to go a little overboard. We often feel the need to cram in as much information as possible, creating slides with barely any blank space left bombarded with long texts, images, and drawings. While all three of these visual tools are important, it is crucial we use them sparingly and in the right manner to invite the viewer in.
To conclude, it is fair to say that unless the project itself is dramatic and demands to shout a certain emotion to the viewer, it is advisable to stick to the idea of Less Is More – to communicate the design effectively, sticking to the point and highlighting the elements of design, plans, and 3d-experience should be more appreciated than loud trendy presentations showing off the less essential aspect (graphical skills) of your role as a designer.
Harleen Dhawan is currently pursuing Interior architecture.
